Program Intro

Charge to the Group; Introduction of Program Materials, Program Design and Proposed Program Use

Charge to the Group- Primary objective of this project: To provide education to agents and other educators so that they can assist producers in addressing issues in the marketing of livestock and livestock products.

Each Session features three main teaching points:

1) Presentation of the Educational Objectives

2) Presentation of the Program as designed for replication

3) Presentation in the Program Logic Model for evaluation

Session 1

Entrepreneurship and Vision

This facilitated session teaches how to build entrepreneurship on vision and determination in the face of obstacles. The presentation builds on materials developed by Courtney Haase, the founder of Nunsuch Goat Dairy in Bradford, N.H. Three key points to be addressed are: 1) Have a vision or goal that you can stick to through good times and bad; 2) Believe in yourself and be in it for the long haul; 3) Don’t let anyone defeat your goal with anger or ridicule.

  Discussion of Entrepreneurship and Vision

Discussion and small group work: Review the topics and resources offered in Session 1. Discuss how Extension can respond to people with useful educational support, i.e. the NCA&TSU Enterprise booklet. Discussion and sharing of other information for Extension that assists with successfully marketing livestock products.

Session 2

Food Safety- Food Security

Dana Hanson, assistant professor and Extension specialist, N.C. State University, discusses the food safety issues that must be addressed to ensure safe food for customers. This session builds the base for understanding permits, licenses and inspections. Issues of: 1) Bacterial contamination; 2) Cleanliness; and 3) Maintenance of temperatures.

Session 2A

Discussion of Extension Education approaches to Food Security

A discussion of resources in your region affecting food safety issues, including: safe food and safe food handling issues in retail meat sales to customers. This session continues the base for understanding permits, licenses and inspections in your state or territory.

Session 3

Permits, Licenses and Food Handling Regulations

Mike Lanier, area agro-business extension agent, N.C. Cooperative Extension. He will discuss how to research and meet the requirements for permits, licenses and other regulations. He will share the resources he has developed for North Carolina and also what has been gathered from South Carolina and Virginia. This session will also address the information steps and concept maps for marketing and regulations: 1) Differing tracks for differing products, 2) Identifying the correct permit sequence, and 3) Regulatory responsibilities.

Session 3A

Permits, Licenses and Food Handling Regulations in your regions.

In this small group discussion, participants discuss approaches that will work in their regions. Discussion and sharing of: Web sites and other information sources, governmental and non-governmental partners; and stories of farm marketers who have successfully navigated the stream of regulations and licenses. Groups will also discuss the resources developed by the project for North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, and the usefulness of the information steps and concept maps that help agents respond to questions.

4:30 - 7:30 p.m. 

Visit the A&T University Farm where researchers show their projects on goats, hogs and chickens. Visit with Project Partners from the North Carolina Goat Cooperative, ALBC, CFSA, Celebrity Dairy, Kellogg Project partnership- “Choices,” Niman Ranch and farmers. Dinner buffet.

8:30 a.m. Session 4

  Customer Centered Marketing

Tim Johnson, marketing specialist for the National Center for Alternative Technology-ATTRA, will update us on: 1) the basics of market research and market planning in terms of livestock and livestock products; and 2) Examples of resources from N.C. A&T and other sources. Emile DeFelice, a successful pork marketer from South Carolina, will describe his experiences in marketing pork products in South Carolina and share market opportunities. He’ll address how to assess what the customer wants; what constitutes successful marketing; and how to implement sound marketing.

 

9:30 a.m. Session 4A

Market Focus and Customer Centered Processes

Discussion of the presentation and of related Extension resources. Discussion will also address how to assist producers with their market planning and market research.

10:30 a.m. Session 5

Business Planning and Management

Rob Holland, Extension specialist, The Agricultural Profitability Center at the University of Tennessee and Amanda Ziehl will review the basics of applying market research and market planning to make businesses profitable. Resource examples from UT and other sources will be presented. The focus of their presentation is to: 1) Build a successful business from successful marketing; 2) Make sure you make money; and 3) Manage a business

11:45 a.m. Session 5A

Business Planning and Management

Discussion of how Extension and its partners in your region can help address business planning and management issues for producers interested in marketing livestock and livestock products. Share resources from your experience and from your state or territory.

Future Directions Evaluation and Reporting

A discussion of the evaluation method used for the project.
