INTEGRATING MULTIPLE OBJECTIVES IN AN AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPE: THE HAW RIVER GREENWAY PROJECT

OBJECTIVES: Coordinate and integrate multiple objectives among private/public partnerships in a developing Piedmont watershed to improve the quality of life through natural and cultural landscape conservation; utilize the Haw River Greenway as a connecting element and focus for coordination between agricultural communities and urbanizing areas; determine local and regional land use issues and how information about these issues are communicated; and coordinate and communicate public and private goals through publications that make landscape and land use data available and useful to rural populations.

APPROACH: Research will identify issues by using GIS technologies, multiple survey instruments and the media; conduct community workshops that focus on natural and cultural landscape conservation; and communicate the inventory and assessment by using slideshows and publications to increase awareness and funding for continuing greenway projects.
