CHARACTERIZATION OF ENTEROTOXIGENIC ESCHERICHIA COLI

OBJECTIVES: Colibacillosis is a disease characterized by postweaning diarrhea, edema, and death in newborn or recently weaned pigs. The etiological agents are Escherichia coli strains K88, K99, 987-P and F-41.

APPROACH: Scientists will attempt to characterize these strains on the molecular level andstudy their antigenic differences. Researchers will also attempt to develop a rapid diagnostic assay utilizing monoclonal antibodies. A rapid diagnostic DNA assay utilizing the Polymerase Chain Reaction will also be attempted.
