Publication Provides Guide to Environmental Projects

Greensboro, NC: In an effort to make concrete jungles the exception rather than the
rule, environmentalists have designed a publication to help youth leaders use school yard
improvement as a means to educate children about the natural resources of their state.
The recently released publication, School Yard Environmental Projects -- A Planning
Primer, is designed to guide students, teachers, parents, and youth group leaders in
creating school yards that promote environmental education.
School Yard Environmental Projects -- A Planning Primer was written by a team of
recreation, forestry, and natural resources specialists, as a part of the North Carolina
Cooperative Extension Service's state major program, Conservation of Natural Resources. In
the publication, the authors describe and explain ways to enhance the educational
environment of rural and urban school grounds. The authors also list educational
curriculum, programs, and resources available to school systems in North Carolina.
The publication is the result of a collaborative effort involving Robert Williamson of the
North Carolina A&T State University Cooperative Extension Program, Mark A. Megalos and
W. Scott Payne of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, and Barry D. New of
the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources.
