Smoak Presents Safety at International Conference
June 12, 1997
Greensboro, NC: Dr. Ellen Smoak recently presented a program entitled, "Skin Cancer Awareness and Prevention Among Agricultural Workers," at The Third International Symposium on Consumer Environmental Issues: Safety, Health, Chemicals and Textiles.
Smoak, a clothing and textiles specialist with the North Carolina A&T State University
Cooperative Extension Program, developed "Skin Cancer Awareness and Prevention Among
Agricultural Workers," with Ellen Miller and Dr. Judy Mock of the North Carolina
Cooperative Extension System.
The curriculum, "The Dark Side of the Sun," supporting this program was adapted
from a similar program in Oklahoma. Smoak, Mock and Miller tailored "The Dark Side of
the Sun" to meet the needs of North Carolina's diverse agricultural community,
including dark-skinned individuals who sometimes ignore sun-related safety issues, and
individuals with a limited understanding of English.
