GLASS NAMED A CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL HORTICULTURIST

Greensboro, NC: Dr. Marihelen Glass, a professor of horticulture at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, has been named a certified professional horticulturist by the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS).

The ASHS Certified Professional Horticulturist (CPH) program identifies qualified horticultural professionals for educational, scientific and service activities with public and private agencies. According to the organization, the skills of these professionals are needed in a broad range of horticultural related issues, including land use, horticultural crop production, waste management and use of agricultural chemicals.

CPH certification is granted based on scholarly presentation, required participation in continuing education programs in particular areas of specialization and work experience supported by references.

Glass joined the faculty at NC A&T State University in 1987, and has been instrumental in developing a plant biotechnology teaching and research program at A&T.

Last year, Glass was one of only 17 to receive the national Great American Gardeners Award from the American Horticultural Society.

Glass has also been honored as Teacher of the Year in the A&T School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, and has received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the North Carolina Board of Governors. In addition to her roles at A&T, she is a consulting horticulturist for greenhouse growers in the Southeast.

Founded in 1903, ASHS is dedicated to advancing all facets of horticultural research, education and application. The organization has nearly 4,000 members.
