Where would I do an Internship?

Internships may be done in companies, agencies, institutions, or in small businesses. Where you do your internship depends upon your interests and abilities which have to do with the major your selected in college.

Company internships are done at businesses designed to sell a product or service at a profit. Companies may be either publicly held with stock traded on a stock exchange, or they may be privately owned by individuals or families.

Agency internships are done at an agency that may or may not be a "for profit organization." Agencies generally provide services rather than a product. Often the people for whom they provide a service are referred to as clients. Fees are charged for services provided by the agency. Nonprofit agencies do not charge fees directly to clients, instead the agency receives funding from governmental bodies, grants or trust funds. Examples of agencies would be advertising agencies which are for profit, and United Child Care Services which is nonprofit.

Institutional internships are done at an institution that generally is organized with a social, educational, or religious purpose. They may be profit or nonprofit organizations. Examples would include hospitals or schools.

Small business internships are done at business that are often owned and operated by one person. For that reason many of the operations are handled by the owner. Interns in this setting often are exposed to every phase of the business quickly. Interns come away from this type of exposure with broad general knowledge about the business.
