Sustainable Agriculture

Program Description:

This program prepares Extension faculty and other agricultural educators in the principles and practices of sustainable agriculture. It is a collaborative effort with the Sustainable Agriculture Program at NCSU. Since 1994, the program has provided education to all new agricultural agents and to at least one person in each county Extension office across the state. It has focused on the organic production and marketing niche, promoting healthy soil management practices, marketing, and alternative enterprises connecting local agriculture with local communities. Research and teaching connections occur through close support of the work being conducted at the Center for Environmental Farming Systems in Wayne County and the NCA&TSU Research Farm.

Target audience:

Extension, other government agency staff (such as NRCS), NGO staff and farmers who conduct training.

Goals and Objectives:

Sustaining farms, the environment and the community through sound production and marketing practices.

Provide professional development opportunities so that they:

1. become knowledgeable in topics relevant to sustaining agriculture.

2. obtaining resources to implement training programs in sustainable agriculture.

3. report outcomes and results of sustainable agriculture programs.
