Small-Scale Production of Horticulture, Flowers and Fruits


Program Description:

This program provides Extension educational resources to small-scale producers about production practices to improve small-scale production of horticultural vegetables, flowers and fruit. The program is closely integrated with on-going research at NCA&TSU Farm, the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) and other research stations. It builds on connections of on-farm demonstrations with local farmers, and research going on across the country, and around the world. Focus is on sustainable practices with new technologies and on best management practices (including, but not limited to, organic) in terms of variety selection, healthy soils and water, pest and weed management. Post Harvest Handling is also addressed.


Target audience:

Small-scale producers. The program is designed for use by and through participation with the Cooperative Extension field faculty and others interested in educational programs to improve small-scale agriculture production management.


Goals and Objectives:

To increase income for small-scale producers through sound production management practices.


Provide an educational program for field faculty with materials to help small-scale producers develop successful skills in:

1. knowledge of and practice of variety selection processes, soil management (cover crops, plastic mulch, etc),

2. appropriate use of irrigation, row covers, hoop structures,

3. sound post harvest handling, and

4. successful market response and delivery.
