"I brought your idea back to our district. We need a 2 hour block of instruction for high school students in summer. The students will be selected from the group of 10th graders who failed our Indiana Proficiency exam. It is our hope that we can teach measurement, geometry, the writing process and many other essential skills as tools for use with growing a garden plot. Our high school is in the middle of an oil refinery, in the heart of a small urban community on Lake Michigan. Gardening lost its appeal and value for our citizens many years ago. Trucks, trains and smoke stacks are the symbols of strength in this community. I know that our students will gain much from getting back in touch with the earth in their community." -- Dr. Martha Harris, Director of Secondary Education, School City of East Chicago
