The SAES's Agricultural Education Program hosted 55 vocational education teachers from across the state for an all-day engine repair workday, sponsored by Briggs & Stratton, July 21. The vocational education teachers all received two engines and repair manuals to take back to their classrooms. Instructors from Briggs & Stratton also provided the teachers an overview of how to educate high school students in maintenance, repair and electrical systems.
Briggs & Stratton started the education program nine years ago, in response to a growing need for new, younger technicians. Teachers receive continuing education credits, in addition to new skills to take back to the classroom. Missy Swain, a Currituck County teacher with a master’s in agricultural education from A&T, was back at her alma mater for the program, and had an interesting observation to pass along. Swain says that a course in agricultural mechanics is popular in her school, probably because shipyards on the coast are always in need of skilled labor. In addition to small engines, the agricultural mechanics curriculum includes welding, electrical systems, woodworking and framing.
A slideshow with photos from the engine repair workshops taken by Ag. Communications and Technology's (ACT photographer James Parker is online at the SAES's flikr photo stream. |
