Make a plan for preserving the land

The sign-up deadline is Monday, Feb. 26 for a Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)  program that provides financial support for beginning farmers and farmers with limited resources who are willing to make commitments to conservation practices that renew natural resources on their farm land. The NRCS has a convenient, online self-evaluation form — for farmers wondering if they qualify as limited-resource farmers. (The general parameters are farm sales of less than $100,000 in each of the past two years, and household income at or below the national poverty level for the same period. Key eligibility criteria for beginning-farmer status is that the applicant has not operated a farm for more than 10 consecutive years.)

The NRCS is seeking proposals that will lead to protection or restoration of wetlands and wildlife habitats, and other farm management planning that emphasizes soil and water conservation. Applicants who qualify can receive up to 90 percent reimbursement for their conservation projects, up to $20,000 per grant.
