No plow know-how
Dr. Keith Baldwin of The Cooperative Extension Program at A&T has put together a four session professional development program on no-till organic vegetable production for Extension agents, ARD technicians and Natural Resources Conservation Service personnel that will begin with an introductory session at Virginia Tech June 6-8, and wind up with a program at the Center for Environmental Farming Systems in Goldsboro on Sept. 28. In between, there will be a training program at A&T's University Farm on June 22, and a second two-day session at Virginia Tech on Sept. 28.
Training topics include:
• High-biomass cover crops for soil quality
• No-till planting — keys to success
• Farmscaping for biological pest control
• Organic nutrient and weed management
• Small- and medium-scale no-till equipment
• Helping farmers implement these systems
This training is made possible in part by funding provided by USDA's Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program for professional development. SARE funding will also be used to develop organic, no-till teaching plots at Virginia Tech, the A&T University Farm and the Center for Environmental Farming Systems.
The complete schedules for the training program and registration information are available at Extension's ILMS Web site.
