Goat checking & broccoli encores

The annual University Farm Field Day on Thursday, Oct. 20, will begin with registration from 8 to 9 a.m. There will be two sets of demonstrations and workshops, a livestock track and a horticulture track. Both of the four-program tracks will be offered twice, so visitors coming to the University Farm Field Day will be able to take in all eight programs by noon. In the spotlight this year:

Livestock

• Controlling parasites in meat goats — Drs. Milli Worku and Ralph Noble

• Research at the new poultry unit — Dr. Willie Willis

• How the new dairy unit is taking shape — Leon Moses and William Boone

• Swine wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands - Dr. G. B. Reddy

Horticulture

• Improving soil quality through cover crops, compost, and no-tillage - Dr. Charles Raczkowski

• Raising heritage broilers on cole-crop pasture - Rickie Holness

• Increasing farm-market sales with heat-tolerant fall tomatoes - Dr. Keith Baldwin

• Organic brussels sprouts and broccoli following summer cover crops and strip tillage - Dr. Keith Baldwin
