Golden LEAF has gone year-round

As of July 1, the Golden LEAF Foundation dispensed with an annual funding cycle in favor of an Open Grants Program that accepts proposals year-around. Golden LEAF was established 10 years ago to distribute half of the funds from North Carolina’s share of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement with cigarette manufacturers. This year Golden LEAF will be looking for projects that complement federal and state stimulus programs to increase the impact of its grants. The foundation receives one-half of North Carolina’s funds from the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement with cigarette manufacturers, and places special emphasis on assisting tobacco-dependent, economically distressed and/or rural communities across the state.

The Open Grants Program also creates new procedures intended to make it easier for organizations to request funding. The Foundation is a resource for qualified nonprofits and governmental entities. It is committed to an open-door policy. The foundation emphasizes assisting tobacco-dependent, economically distressed rural communities that at one time had tobacco-dependent economies. The foundation has awarded 762 grants totaling more than $374 million since its inception. The Foundation will focus grants in three areas: agriculture, job creation and retention, and workforce preparedness. Proposals providing other opportunities to support and develop economic strength for its target communities are also accepted by the agency. For the funding cycle, Golden LEAF will be looking for projects that complement and leverage federal and state stimulus programs to increase the impact of its grants making.
