This is a statewide campaign to encourage North Carolina residents to commit to saving. Nationally, most families have low or no savings to fall back on, so they use credit cards to fill the savings gap.  The NCSaves campaign asks individuals to enroll in the program by setting a savings goal. The campaign hopes to enroll 3000 savers during this week. Dr. Claudette Smith, family financial management specialist and program leader for The Cooperative Extension Program at A&T, wants you to be one of them.  All partnering organizations have a goal to ensure the state goal is achieved; Dr. Smith needs your help. And everyone, considering today’s economy, should be thinking about building their savings. You can sign up using the MSWord form that can be e-mailed to her or delivered to her office at Coltrane Hall once it has been completed.  You can also sign up online. Those who fill out the form and commit to a new savings plan during America Saves Week will receive a regular newsletter, the American Saver, which provides tips and motivational stories that will keep them pumped up for reaching their savings goal. Enrolling during NCSaves Week will also make you eligible for drawings for savings bonds donated by North Carolina financial institutions. Your information will not be shared or sold to marketers. The first topic on the agenda will be the N.C. Research Campus in Kannapolis, the SAES’s Center for Post Harvest Technologies, and opportunities that the SAES slice of a $1 billion facility represent for SAES research, teaching and Extension faculty. Another topic on the summit agenda is the recently released report by the University of North Carolina Tomorrow Commission, established by Erskine Bowles, president of the UNC system, to formulate recommendations for how the 16-campus system can meet the needs of North Carolinians in the next 20 years. The Charlotte Observer began a six-part series of articles that was hard on the poultry industry on Feb. 10, and the largest beef recall on record gobbled up newspaper headlines the following Sunday. (Video footage from a slaughterhouse that had unsettling revelations about handling sick and injured animals sparked the recall.) With animal agriculture now hot on the public consciousness, the focus for the educational forums during Small Farms Week 2008  (March 31 – April 6) looks presciently timely. There will be programs on pastured swine and poultry, and goat herd management on Tuesday, April 1, that will be of special interest to small-scale farmers in view of the recent negative publicity for “corporate farming.” This heightened interest could translate to a surge in the return rate for Small Farms Week registrations. Cooperative Extension has landed host rights for two national conferences that will bring Extension educators from across the country to the Triangle area this spring. This year’s Priester National Extension Health Conference will be at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel & Convention Center in Durham April 8 through 10. A few weeks later, from April 27 through May 1, N.C. Cooperative Extension is hosting the 2008 National Extension Technology Conference (NETC) at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Cary. Both conferences will offer professional development opportunities that SAES teaching and research faculty — as well as on-campus Extension faculty and members of North Carolina Cooperative Extension’s field staff— should look into. And both conferences also have potential that will make a stroll through the web sites very worthwhile for many SAES students. To qualify for an early bird discount, registrations for the Priester conference must be postmarked by Feb.  29. The early registration fee is $229; the fee after the early bird deadline is $279; and the student fee is $149. The registration fee for a pre-conference program on April 7, which includes a tour of EPA and National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences facilities, and a workshop on reaching the Latino population, is $49.
