Department of Family and Consumer Sciences

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) prepares students for careers that focus on improving the quality of life of individuals and families. Our graduates are employed in educational and other service institutions, agencies, companies and industries involved in apparel merchandising and design, food and nutrition, and child development and family education.
During their studies, students are given a broad understanding of nutritious diets, family and parent education, family financial planning, human resources, and appropriate living environments. The department also teaches technology for product development in the apparel design industry and commercial food industry.
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences prepares students to think critically, to communicate ideas effectively and to develop leadership potential for the profession. This preparation occurs in excellent facilities that include a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Lab for students studying fashion design, a 5-Star Child Development Laboratory for students in child development, and a state-of-the-art Food Sensory Laboratory for students majoring in nutrition and food sciences. Internships and field experiences are a requirement for graduation. Leadership skills are developed through student involvement in department-based student organizations and participation in professional conferences.
