Career Outlook

Students who decide to major in fashion merchandising and design may pursue careers in a variety of retail and business areas. Management training programs are offered by many companies that lead to such positions as buyer, fashion coordinator, merchandise manager, store manager, and display personnel. They also may be employed as designers, stylists, patternmakers, or production managers for diverse types of fashion and special use apparel and accessories.

Courses within this department provide information regarding production, promotion, and distribution of apparel products including merchandising selection and assortment, costing and price strategies, store planning, personnel management, and consumer buying behavior. These courses also provide students with experiences in garment assembly, pattern grading, draping, and CAD (Computer Assisted Design) for apparel. Supporting classes from art, communication, and business provide support for this major.

Internship Opportunities

A & T offers fashion merchandising and design students the unique opportunity to integrate classroom work with many of the businesses and industries that fuel the local economy. Our interns have worked for such companies as VF Corporation, Sara Lee, Belk, JC Penny, Dillard’s, Kohl’s, Macys, BET, Victoria’s Secret, Express, Wet Seal, and Hecht’s to name a few. The internship experience consists of two courses (FCS 486, FCS 487). FCS 486 is taken the semester before FCS 487.
